Naomi Osaka Out
The Australian Open has suffered a noticeable drop in regards to the women’s branch since the Japanese tennis player and two-time tournament champion, Naomi Osaka, will not participate in the 2023 edition.
The announcement was made through the social networks of the event, where the reason why the young woman did not participate was not specified.
“Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open. We will miss her”, said the organizers of the competition that will begin on January 16 in Melbourne.
Due to Osaka being out, the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska takes her place in the draw.
She has lost positions in the ranking.
Osaka last played in September 2023 at the Tokyo Premier, where she withdrew before her second-round match, complaining of abdominal pain.
Osaka’s performance has declined and has made her lose places in the ATP ranking, which was the number one in the world, currently ranked 42. She lost in the third round in Melbourne, in the first round of Roland Garros and the US Open, and also missed Wimbledon due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Venus Williams will not participate either.
Venus Williams, who had received an invitation from the organization to play the Australian Open at the age of 42, withdrew due to injury after losing this week in the second round of the Auckland tournament.
Who is the favorite to win the Australian Open?
Although Osaka’s performance was not at its highest level, she was still one of the favored tennis players to advance to at least the semifinals.
But in regards to the odds, the favorites to win the Australian Open are:
Iga Swiatek 10/23
Caroline Garcia 12/1
Aryna Sabalenka 9/1
Jessica Pegula 12/1
Jessica Pegula is a clear threat
Jessica Pegula is the player to watch as the daughter of Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula secured her first career victory over a world No. 1.
Peluga defeated Iga Świątek 6-2 6-2 in the opening match of the United Cup semifinal in Sydney.
Świątek had dominated all the matches against Peluga last year, beating it all four times they met on the court.
“[The] conditions are totally different than anywhere else I’ve played her,” world No. 3 Pegula told the WTA. “Obviously maybe I had a little bit of an advantage, they just flew in yesterday.
“Definitely the fastest conditions I have played her. Every other place I’ve played her has been pretty slow.
“I think that favored me a lot, and I was able to use that to my advantage and play a really super clean match. I think I just was able to execute my game plan probably better than I have previous times.”
Sabalenka arrives with high confidence.
Aryna Sabalenka, number five in the world, was crowned champion of the Adelaide tournament by beating the Czech Linda Noskova 6-3, 7-6(4).
This is the 11th title of her career and a huge confidence boost as she hasn’t won since the Mutua Madrid Open in 2021.
Sabalenka won the first set with authority in 38 minutes. Still, in the second, Noskova did not give in, and it was necessary to resort to the ‘tie break’ in which the Belarusian imposed her greatest experience to score the victory in a tournament.
