Seven-time Pro Bowler Julio Jones is coming off a losing season in Tennessee.

Jones comes to the Buccaneers after two seasons in which he missed 14 games due to injury. After being traded by the Atlanta Falcons to the Tennessee Titans, he had career lows for him in receptions (31), receiving yards (434), and receiving touchdowns (1). With such a poor performance, the Titans released Jones in March.

Jones joins the Bucs on a one-year deal where he will share a roster of wide receivers that includes Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Tyler Johnson, Scotty Miller, and Breshad Perriman, plus newly acquired free agent Russell Gage.

Last week, Tampa Bay also acquired veteran tight end Kyle Rudolph, a move to strengthen the position after Rob Gronkowski retired.

A Headache for the Bucs

Interestingly, in his ten seasons with the Falcons, the Buccaneers witnessed firsthand what the wide receiver is capable of when he’s healthy. 

In 16 games against Tampa Bay, he had 1,841 yards and 11 touchdowns, the most by any receiver against the Bucs in franchise history.

Jones, 33, is the Falcons’ all-time leader in receptions (848) and yards (12,896) and is second to Roddy White in touchdown receptions (63). His 91.9 receiving yards per game represents the best average in NFL history.

Also, he leads the NFL in receiving yards since 2014, and Evans leads the NFL in receiving touchdown catches (75) during that span. Now, they are both on the same team.

Jones’ 6-3, 220-pound physique helps him frequently win head-to-head matchups against cornerbacks and gives the Buccaneers’ offense a strong presence in the flat zone and on the wings and speed on the fringes post routes, as evidenced by his 4,343 career receiving yards.

The last few years have been difficult.

Tennessee paid two draft picks to acquire Jones last year, hoping he would provide some much-needed balance to his passing game. Still, he appeared in just ten games because of injuries, scoring the fewest totals in his career. It was the second straight season that Jones was limited by injury.

Play with Brady

At the end of the day, it’s about responsibility. 

I need to take responsibility for him, the team, and everyone else. I have to come to work when it’s all said and done. We have Tom, but we all have to work, nobody will give us anything, so we have to work every day. 

That’s what it’s all about,” Jones said.

Asked if he ever thought about playing at Tampo, Jones said: “I never thought about it, but it’s in the past. I’m here now. I am looking to the future, not to the past. It’s a great opportunity to be a part of something special in the Buccaneers family.”

Finally, Jones referred to the offense that the team is building. 

“I think defenses should zone out just because of the offensive weapons we have, there are a lot of them, and that’s great. 

At the end of the day, we must stay healthy and work daily. 

At the end of the game or the season, whatever happens, happens. We need to take it one day at a time and work on improving our chemistry.”
