Liverpool vs Villarreal. Aims to reach their tenth Champions League final while their rival Villarreal wants to play their first.
Below we analyze how these teams reach the semifinal of the Champions League
Liverpool
This is Liverpool’s third UEFA Champions League semi-final in five seasons.
Without a doubt, they are the club that has suffered the least to reach this stage of the competition. In fact, Jürgen Klopp’s men put their qualification in Lisbon on track with their win against Benfica (1-3), against whom a lofty draw at Anfield (3-3) was enough.
After an impeccable group stage and after only giving up an inconsequential defeat against Inter in the round of 16 (0-1), the ‘reds’ have been nominated as the top favorites to champion the Champions
League, beating a Manchester City team that eliminated in the semifinals of the Emirates FA Cup and with which they are competing for the Premier League.
Liverpool were one of three teams to win all six group stage games this season, along with Ajax (Group C) and Bayern (E), although they were the only one of the three to achieve seven straight wins after winning in the first leg of the round of 16.
The ‘red’ victory at Anfield by one goal has a price of 3.95, and it goes up to 4.20 in the main bookmakers. In addition, Liverpool is characterized by scoring in all its games, so the bookmakers have a rate of 3.20 for the Kloop´s team to score at least one goal.
Villarreal
Unai Emery’s Villarreal arrives with nothing to lose and everything to gain. The ‘yellow submarine’ as the club is known, has already equaled its best record in the competition.
They had reached the semi-finals again, as they did in the 2005-2006 season, when another English team, Arsenal, prevented them from advancing to the final.
They arrive with the confidence of having consecutively eliminated two European greats, such as Juventus and Bayern Munich, one of the favorites in the champions.
Villarreal is the 20th team to reach more than one UEFA Champions League semi-final and the fifth from Spain.
The Spanish side picked up ten points in this season’s group stage to reach the round of 16, falling one point behind Manchester United, having lost 2-1 away and 0-2 at home to the Red Devils, who ironically defeated in the UEFA Europa League final last season.
Victory against United came in Villarreal’s first major European final, although they were twice UEFA Intertoto Cup winners (2003, 2004) after being runners-up in 2002.
