The 40-year-old tennis player Serena Williams has confirmed in an article for Vogue magazine that she plans to retire from professional tennis once her participation in the upcoming US Open is over.
The US Open will take place from August 29 to September 11. Serena’s announcement has raised great expectations for the tournament as everyone wants to see what the player is capable of in her last professional tournament.
“I have never liked the word retirement. I think of this as a transition. Perhaps the best word to describe it is that I am in an evolution”, were the words of the winner of 23 Grand Slams.
“I am here to tell you that I am moving away from tennis, towards other things that are important to me. I want to grow my family”, confirmed the youngest of the Williams in Vogue.
The tennis player, in a month, will be 41 years old and is currently competing at the WTA 1,000 in Toronto, where she defeated Nuria Párrizas in the first round, thus achieving her first victory in more than 400 days.
Prominent career of Serena Williams
Williams endes a prominent tennis career by winning 73 singles titles, of which 23 were Grand Slam titles won: seven Australian Opens, three Roland Garros, seven Wimbledons, and six US Opens.
To all this, we must add successes such as being number one in the WTA ranking for 319 weeks, four Olympic gold medals (one in singles and three in doubles), five WTA Finals, 23 more tournaments won in doubles, 14 of them being Grand Slam.
Regarding her impressive career, Williams said, “There are people who say that I am not the GOAT because I did not beat Court’s record, which she achieved before the ‘Open Era’ began. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Of course, I want it.
But I don’t think about it every day. If I’m in a final, yes, that’s where I think about it. Maybe overthoughtch about it, and that didn’t help.
The way I see it, he should have more than 30 Grand Slams. I had my options after giving birth.
I played while breastfeeding. I played through postpartum depression. But I didn’t get there. I should; I could, I could.
If I have to choose between building my tennis resume and building my family, I choose the latter. I won 23 times, and that is something extraordinary”, reflects the champion.
Her family is the reason for her retirement.
Serena mentions the family as the main reason to end her career in sports, in addition to her different businesses.
“I want to be a big sister,” Serena says her daughter told her a few days ago.
“I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I do not think it’s fair. If I were a man, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be playing and winning while my wife did the physical work of expanding our family.
Maybe I’d be more like Tom Brady if I had that chance. Don’t get me wrong:
I love being a woman and loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia.
And I almost did the impossible: a lot of people don’t realize I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017.
But I’m turning 41 this month, and something has to happen,” Serena explains.
Odds for the US Open
Seeing Serena Williams fight for her last US Open title would be poetic and epic, but the tennis player does not arrive at the tournament as the favorite.
The odds for Williams range from +1600 to +2900. With those odds, it’s not a bad bet if the tennis player was in better shape, but her performance in the last two years hasn’t been at its best, and she is no longer the wrecking machine that she was.
However, since it is her last tournament, Serena may leave everything on the field and give us an impressive farewell.
