Some call this the most significant turnaround in baseball history. The largest deadline swap in history – The Case of Juan Soto. There has never been a deadline trade with a young superstar like Soto. In fact, he is the first player 23 or younger to be traded during the season in a year when he was an All-Star.
On Tuesday, the San Diego Padres acquired precocious star Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals in a huge deal that bolsters their playoff bids by adding one of baseball’s most feared hitters.
Perhaps the most similar situation is when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees in one of the most infamous trades in history, but this situation is entirely different.
The Nationals would trade Juan Soto immediately
The deal came hours before the trade close, San Diego getting first baseman Josh Bell and trading half a dozen players to Washington, including rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore and first baseman/DH Luke Voit.
The others are prospects James Wood, C.J. Abrams, Robert Hassell III, and Jarlin Susanna.
Voit was included in the package at the last minute after San Diego first baseman Eric Hosmer appealed a clause in his contract and vetoed the trade to Washington.
Washington general manager Mike Rizzo set a high price last month after Soto turned down a 15-year, $440 million extension offer.
Rejecting the extension, Soto would remain with the team for a couple of seasons, but nobody expected that the Nationals would trade him immediately.
Soto’s stats
Soto signed with the Washington Nationals as an international free agent in 2015.
He made his MLB debut in 2018 and was the runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. In 2019, he was a crucial part of the Nationals’ first World Series championship.
In 2020, he won the National League batting title with a .351 average.
With Washington, Soto hit .246 with 20 home runs, 45 RBIs, and 91 walks in 101 games.
Soto becomes the latest Nationals star to leave amid a rebuilding of the team and plans by the owners to sell it.
San Diego is the team to beat.
Soto will begin a new stint in San Diego during his second All-Star season, joining a potent lineup that includes Dominican stars Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. When the shortstop returns from a left wrist injury.
“It’s awesome to have those three players on one team,” said Wil Myers, San Diego’s longest-serving player. “Looking forward to seeing that trio, hopefully in the next week or two.”
Tatis would have between 10 days and two weeks to be included in the active roster.
On August 1, San Diego’s World Series odds sat at +1800 or 18-1, which gave it the seventh-lowest odds to win the World Series.
San Diego desperately needs more consistent bats in its offense, as the Padres currently sport the league’s 19th-best WRC+ (99) along with the 20th-best wOBA (.305).
The arrival of Soto and Josh Bell could give the team the offensive boost it needs to clinch a World Series berth.
In fact, when the arrival of both players was confirmed, the odds of winning the World Series for the Padres went to +1000, which is a significant jump.
Although the Padres are not going to win their division, they count on the roaster to do a lot of damage and sneak into the World Series.
Let’s remember that the Nationals won the championship as a wild card team so that history could repeat itself for Soto in San Diego.
