This figure represents a significant increase from the previous year and is expected to increase further over the coming years as salaries for top athletes continue to rise.

The report outlines that player salaries have risen sharply over the past few years due mainly to increasing interest in professional sports and greater investment from owners. As a result of this rising trend, athletes can now negotiate larger contracts than before.

In particular, six teams have thrown the house out of the window and have spent so much that they have exceeded the salary cap of 230 million dollars and had to pay luxury taxes.

The Dodgers shelled out $32.4 million in luxury taxes.

For their part, the New York Mets paid $30.8 million in the same fee.

Yankees, Padres, Phillies, and Red Sox also made luxury tax payments.

A great year in revenue

MLB had a record year coming in, $10.8 billion in 2022. New media deals with Fox, TBS, and ESPN brought in $1.8 billion, and endorsement deals added another $1.2 billion.

The league will add a new revenue stream this year with ads appearing on players’ jerseys and helmets.
